Use Sugru to Protect Your Expensive Play Equipment From the Sticky Hands of Children

Children and electronics are usually incompatible. Thanks to my siblings, I have a few broken headphone jacks and a missing iPod. My family is visiting this week and my little sister will be looking for something in the form of a controller to play with and demolish as soon as possible. So, I’m preparing the game controllers in my living room for payback with Sugru , a silicone and rubber adhesive putty that lets you customize just about anything you own.

Well, I won’t be tweaking my current PS4 controllers. Those are collected in a box. I cover old Xbox 360 controllers in Sugru to make sure they stand up to real kids’ tests.

Reinforced Sugru rubber will protect your controller from falling off broken plastic. For this to work, you need to figure out where to actually place the material on your controller, with all its curves and edges.

A quick way to figure out where to apply Sugru is to lay the controller down on a flat surface and see where the touch points are. These are the first places that deserve harsh love. From there, you can shape Sugru into whatever shape you think is best.

Place a little on the sides of the controller where the seams meet to prevent it from opening or cracking the plastic, and adding a little over the joysticks will also protect them from dirty fingers covered in snacks. These few minutes of preparation will save you some broken electronics and delight the restless youth.
