Here’s How Each US Region Will React to Climate Change

Climate change is real, and it affects us not only because the planet is getting warmer . Researchers and economists at the Climate Impact Lab have created a map showing how climate change will affect various counties from now until 2099, with areas near the oceans and the south most affected, NPR reports.

Using data on how heatwaves and droughts changed the American economy from 1981 to the present, they were able to predict how climate change will affect the economy if it continues at its current pace. According to the data, by 2100 the US gross domestic product could fall by 3-6 percent.

Climate change will affect different areas in different ways. For example, colder locations such as New England will benefit little from climate change through lower heating bills, while warmer locations and coastal cities will be negatively impacted by crop losses and displacement from these areas.

Yale has also created a map showing people’s views on climate change in different regions of the United States, showing that most Americans believe in climate change but do not believe it will affect them personally.
