Happy Hour With 3 Ingredients: Fortified Shendi

Happy weekend and welcome back to Happy 3 Ingredient Hour , a weekly drinks column featuring very simple yet delicious libations. This week, we’re making a drink that’s perfect for sipping while lazily swimming in the pond: shandi.

In fact, it is more than just a shandi as it has an additional ingredient to help. While I don’t mind mixing a “traditional” recipe of equal parts beer and citrus soda (or lemonade), I find them a little sweet and a little weak in the alcoholic drinks section. To solve this very serious problem, I added a shot of vodka. I love plain old Reika , but you can also use any Deep Eddy citrus (or cranberry) vodka that is surprisingly good.

Since there is no ice in this drink, it is important that all ingredients are pre-chilled, so keep everything in the refrigerator if you intend to mix them outdoors. To prepare a fortified summer sippy cup, you will need:

  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 3 ounces of cheap beer (You are about to add soda, so get something tasteless.)
  • 3 ounces of citrus soda, any flavor

Pour everything into a pint glass (or red Solo cup, or insulated glass) and stir gently. Take a sip as you float down the river, or if that doesn’t work, at least swing your legs in the pool.
