Don’t Buy Ladybugs to Fight Aphids and Other Gardening Myths Debunked

Ladybugs eat aphids. So if your potatoes are being eaten by aphids, you might be tempted to mail-order a ton of ladybugs (yes, that’s what you can do) to solve your garden problems. However, there is a flaw in this plan: when you let go of the ladybirds, they fly away .

I learned the truth about ladybugs, which really should have been obvious from the very beginning, thanks to this video. This is taken from the Good Gardening Videos site, created bygarden writers and scientists who know which advice is factual and which is not. This video debunks four myths, but there is still more where they came from.

So if the ladybugs fly away, what can you do? The host invites you to turn your garden into a place where ladybugs want to live – and when you do, you won’t need to buy ladybugs because they will move in for free. To create a ladybug paradise, you need to grow a variety of plants, avoid the use of insecticides, and give at least some of your aphids a chance. After all, ladybugs will not appear if you constantly take food supplies from them.

Watch the video to find out more, including the truth about adding phosphorus to soil (it’s not as bad as you think and can hurt) and two myths about mulching.
