Why Does Your Cat Like Small Spaces?

Cats don’t just love small spaces, they love them. From Amazon boxes to grocery bags to the tiny crevice between the bottom of the couch and the floor. They even curl up in a square of tape on the floor! But why is your cat so attracted to these small spaces?

The answer has to do with the safety and protection these places offer, and whether they are truly safe or not, it is about how they make your cat feel. Science of Us explains how the borders of a box or corner under the couch make your cat feel more comfortable than sitting outdoors. When they wedge into these spaces, they can relax and more easily keep track of limited points from which an attack can emanate.

Aside from giving your cat tossed boxes and bags to dangle in, you can make a cat tent out of it and make sure it has a couple of tall spots to curl up in. Higher places, such as a cat tree or a shelf, serve the same purpose because they give cats a good vantage point to see any perceived threats approaching their path.
