Discussion this week

Before hacking into his own biology, Dave Asprey was a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley but felt he was losing weight while trying to lose weight. A low-calorie diet and exercise just didn’t work for him. This marked the beginning of his research into biohacking, detailed in his first book, The Bulletproof Diet . He ended up choosing something similar but different from the paleo diet, with high fat levels combined with short, high-intensity workouts. And yes, coffee with organic butter to start the day.

His new book, Strong Head, focuses more on what you can do to improve your brain. Of course, there are no magic tricks to becoming a genius, but you can control your diet and your surroundings to boost your productivity and focus a little. For Dave, how you feel and how your body functions is a direct reflection of how your mitochondria work. (Mitochondria, as you might recall from high school biology, are like the energy settings of a cell.) Some theories suggest that mitochondria evolved from primitive bacteria , and in part for this reason, Dave believes that mitochondria actually behave like networks of bacteria that literally control your body. traction and solutions. Keep your mitochondria happy with the right diet so you can stay focused, alert, and healthy.

(I personally would not take the mitochondrial picture so literally, but you can take it as an illustrative metaphor for how your body works as a collection of millions of cells.) For Bulletproof Exec, however, this is just the tip of the iceberg. about what you can do to hack your body and brain. Listen to the show to learn about the Tibetan origins of bulletproof coffee, how to sleep better, and what’s next for Dave Asprey.

Our weekly updates

Every week we like to wrap up the show with small improvements we’ve made to our lives. This week we are talking about hydration, cyberpunk and video games.

  • Melissa: Melissa drank water at room temperature. Exciting! It actually helps her drink more water and stay hydrated, as the cold water makes you take smaller sips. Water cracked.
  • Dave: Dave recently became a cyborg. He has a sensor on his arm that allows him to check his blood sugar wirelessly. It’s a quarter-sized plastic circle attached to his bicep that can instantly send his stats to a device with an NFC sensor. Very sci-fi.
  • Andy: I got my hands on the Nintendo Switch. As a staunch supporter of Nintendo, I think this is the first console I’ve bought since the GameCube. So yes, I still ignore reality in my spare time and flee to Hyrule.

How can I ask a question?

There are two ways to ask a question:

  • Call (347) 687-8109 and write down the question. The calls are awesome! We love them and we can play yours on the show!
  • Send your question to upgrade@lifehacker.com .

Try to keep your questions as short as possible. That means 3-5 sentences for emails and 30-60 seconds for calls and videos. Your questions may be specific, but broader questions are generally better because they apply to more people. In any case, we look forward to hearing from you.
