Why You Need to Start Drinking in the Shower

Drinking in the shower is a pastime that many Lifehacker employees consider to be their loved ones. What’s a popular drink for an event like this? Beer. Also coffee and maybe a trendy cocktail. Here’s how you, too, can enjoy one of the greatest and simplest pleasures of your adult life.

You may have heard of beer shower (not to be confused with beer shower, which can be just as great). Before this conversation appeared on our Lifehacker Slack, it never crossed my mind to mix drinking and shower. All I could think was why? Our resident shower beer expert Beth Skoreki says:

Perfect for evening roller derby training when you come home sweaty and exhausted. You need hot showers and cold beer, you are an adult, so there is no reason why you cannot take both at the same time. You just need to pamper yourself and relax. Shower beer hits all points.

I see. A hot, relaxing shower is good mental stimulation, and when you combine it with a drink that helps relieve stress after a hard day, it’s indulgent magic. Our own editor-in-chief, Melissa Kirsch, simply says, “I don’t see the point in taking a shower if I can’t have a cocktail while I’m doing it.” Still others do it because it is an effective pre-game while you prepare to light up the city.

Then there is the question of how . I turned to Skoretsky again.

My beer is usually bottled (I love that). You open the bottle before you shower and just place it on the ledge of the bathtub as if you were putting on shampoo. Or maybe a soap dish or the nearest windowsill will do.

Tall beers may be the best option if you are particularly clumsy or want glass to keep out of the shower for safety reasons. If you prefer to pour your drink into a separate container, Kirsch recommends a heavy-bottomed glass. A vacuum sealed container like HydroFlask can also help maintain a constant temperature. Meanwhile, Senior Staff Writer Thorin Klosovski chimed in, “Don’t make it too complicated. Shitty beer in the can. In the shower.”

Other tips: Don’t overlook the importance of beer temperature. Showering too long or too hot can make the beer warm, and of course, don’t let the water mix with the drink. If you’re not a beer drinker, Kirsch loves showers with soda and a little lime. Do you want anything alcoholic? You can also use coffee for the shower and protein shakes for the shower. Bonus: Play your favorite song and pretend the drink is a microphone.

Whichever drink you prefer, it’s all about relieving stress and enjoying adult life.
