Save Money on Your Wi-Fi Day Pass by Purchasing It on the First, Shorter Leg of Your Flight

When you pay for in-flight Wi-Fi , you usually have several options. You can pay for a day pass, pay only for the duration of the flight, or pay for 30 minutes at a time. If you are on a connecting flight with the same airline, a day pass for the first flight may be the cheaper option.

On a recent American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York, I quickly made it to Phoenix. The flight lasted about an hour and a half, so Wi-Fi was pretty cheap: about $ 10 per flight and $ 20 per day. I thought, what’s the point of spending $ 20 on a day pass? I’ll just buy $ 10 for a second, longer trip from Phoenix to New York. To my surprise, the price of Wi-Fi per flight jumped to $ 24.95 during the second leg (and the daily pass was almost $ 40). In other words, I paid five bucks more than I would have paid in a day.

Your own mileage may vary, but this is something to look out for, especially considering that most airlines use Gogo Wi-Fi and their prices are all over the place. Remember to check the Wi-Fi settings on your flight in advance. And if a day pass on the first, shorter leg of the flight costs less than $ 20, you might consider paying for it now rather than the more expensive pass later. Or better yet, pay in advance directly from the Gogo site , which might even be cheaper.
