AT&T Unveils Terrible New “Unlimited” Prepaid Data Plan

AT&T today unveiled a new unlimited option for its GoPhone prepaid plan without contracts. For $ 65 / month ($ 60 / month when you subscribe to AutoPay), you get slow internet access with poor video quality.

With the new tariff plan, GoPhone Unlimited customers get unlimited calls, text messages and data. But this data is limited to a maximum speed of 3 Mbps, which is half the average LTE AT&T speed of 7.93 Mbps . This speed drops even further if you want to watch a video. The video is not only limited to 480p resolution, but also offers a maximum download speed of up to 1.5Mbps. Even the “no limit” banner is a bit of a misnomer, as AT&T will temporarily slow down your already slow data during periods of high traffic if you exceed 22GB of usage in a month. You also won’t be able to pair another device to your phone.

For the record, AT&T’s GoPhone Unlimited plan was previously $ 60 a month and you got your first 8GB of data at LTE speeds before it slowed down. This plan is now closer to AT&T’s recently introduced unlimited data plan , but with a much lower rate limit.

If the unlimited plan is too dumb for you, AT&T will now offer a 6GB data plan for $ 45 a month ($ 40 a month with AutoPay), which will keep LTE speeds, although they drop to 128kbps if you go over 6GB. per month. … 128Kpbs – At least ideal if you’re still playing Warcraft II over a dial-up connection. Unused data for this tariff plan will be carried over to the next month.

We usually really like out-of-order phone plans , but AT&T’s unlimited plan seems like a terrible deal here. Even worse when you consider Cricket’s $ 60 / month unlimited plan , which uses the same network and 22GB soft caps as AT&T, doesn’t cap your data until you hit 8Mbps for LTE and 4Mbps. for 4G.

The new plans have yet to be published on the AT&T website, but you can expect them to arrive soon.
