Five Principles to Help Make Your Home Videos Better

Shooting a decent video is about more than pointing the camera at something and recording. If you want to turn your videos from mediocre to great, here’s what you need to work on.

In this video, youtuber / photographer Peter McKinnon shares his best advice for anyone looking to shoot their own videos:

  1. Make lighting your top priority: Whether it’s a three-point lighting setup or just the strength of the sun, lighting is the most important thing . Good window lighting is ideal for shooting on a budget. It is soft and will light up your scenes beautifully. Think ahead and plan out locations for filming without lighting if necessary.
  2. Edit your music: Sound can drastically change the way you take pictures. Hilarious music will make the video look vulgar or ruin the frame you want it to look rich. Music immediately sets the tone and can be used to highlight important moments and clips, so keep this in mind when editing your video.
  3. Actually study your software: if you want more control over your video content, you need to take full advantage of the editing you choose. Explore the ins and outs, search for tutorials, attend seminars, and find online classes. Do your best to learn the language you want.
  4. Add movement to your shots: don’t shoot everything with a tripod; it’s static and boring. It doesn’t have to be crazy. Slowly approach the subject, pan to the right, rotate around the subject, etc. If the camera moves, it helps to propel the story forward.
  5. Consider where and when you shoot: What you shoot is important, but where you shoot it is equally important. Think about where your scenes will look best, and think about how you will film those scenes in that location. Will you shoot from below to capture the skyscrapers in the background? Will you have a scenic sunset behind your property? Will you shoot during golden hour for the best natural light? Plan ahead.

If you focus on these five basic principles, your videos are almost guaranteed to look better right away. Over time, these strategies will become second nature to you, and you will be able to move on to more advanced techniques.
