If Your Child’s Car Seat Belts Are Loose, Look for the Wayward Cheerio

Kids are riots all over the place, and the car seat is no exception. This mess can become dangerous if a piece of food or toy gets stuck in the seat release lever – the semi-secret part of the seat that needs to run smoothly for the belts to fit snugly.

This lever is often hidden under a flap between your child’s legs – and if you weren’t the one who installed or usually uses the car seat, you might not even know it is there. You press this lever to loosen the seat belt, so if something gets stuck in this lever, the seat belts will appear to be constantly loosened.

Transportation Canada recently investigated some car seats with loose straps. One of the parents asked for an investigation, believing that the seats were defective, but it turned out that food debris was stuck in a hard-to-reach place on the lever. Read more at the link below, including videos from Graco (the manufacturer of these seats) on how to thoroughly clean your seat.
