Everything You Need to Know About HDMI 2.1

You might just be used to HDMI 2.0, but HDMI 2.1 is on the way and it has all kinds of awesome new features. Here’s what you need to know about the Significant Update.

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly small jump from 2.0 to 2.1. As Linus Sebastian explains in this Techquickie YouTube video , HDMI 2.1 provides support for all kinds of cool stuff. Here are some of the new features:

  • The biggest news is that HDMI 2.1 will support content up to 10K. It will also support 120Hz frame rates at 10K resolution.
  • Update 2.1 adds a “Game Mode VRR” feature that allows a source device, such as a PC or game console, to sync the refresh rate to the connected display. Ideally, this will significantly reduce screen tearing.
  • HDMI 2.1 will support HDR like 2.0 , but it will also provide dynamic metadata that lets you change the exact brightness range for each frame, as in Dolby Vision HDR. The catch, however, is that HDMI 2.1 dynamic metadata will work with the open HDR 10 standard. This means better HDR images for cheaper devices.
  • The sound will improve too. The Enhanced Audio Return Channel activates object-oriented audio circuits similar to Dolby Atmos and DTS X. This makes positional sound more realistic no matter how many speakers your surround setup has.

Of course, to take advantage of all the exciting new features that HDMI 2.1 has to offer, you’ll need everything new. New TV, new source devices, new copies of your movies and TV shows, and new cables that are HDMI 2.1 compliant. It’s probably not worth updating once the update is out earlier this year, but it’s good to keep this information in mind when thinking about your potential home theater setup in the future.
