What to Look for When Buying a Silicone Spatula

A silicone spatula is one of the most versatile kitchen utensils you can purchase. From scrambled eggs to scraping the last pieces of cake batter out of the bowl, all of these things are used and you need to make sure you get the good stuff.

Cook’s Illustrated tested a whole bunch of paddles to find your favorite ( which you can purchase here ), but they also highlighted key points to look out for when choosing this handy scraper / agitator / spreader:

  • Right Size: Head too small will make you stir for what seems like forever, but head too big and you can’t scrape things out of smaller spaces like food processor bowls or measuring cups. For maximum versatility, choose a width of a couple of inches.
  • Don’t Be Overly Flexible: Flexibility is good, but if the trowel bends into an “ineffective L-shape” with just a little effort, it is very frustrating for your life. Click on any potential purchases to see how they fold under pressure.
  • It should be solid : the spatula that comes in one piece means the head won’t break or fall off, and the silicone body is not only easy to grip (and dishwasher safe), but it won’t melt if it touches with a hot frying pan.

Once you’ve armed yourself with the perfect spatula, you’re ready to stir, scrape, fold, and spread with frantic energy.
