LibreOffice Updates Its Office Suite With Many New Features, Introduces a Private Cloud Version

Windows / Mac / Linux: LibreOffice, the free open source alternative to Microsoft Office, has just received a major update that adds a ton of new features along with a new cloud version that you can install on your own server.

Key features of the update include an improved text layout engine, table styles in Writer, improved spreadsheet compatibility in Calc, and keyboard shortcuts now appear in context menus to help you explore them. There are many new features, and you can check out most of them on the LibreOffice landing page for this release .

There’s also a new experimental toolbar that acts much like the Office Ribbon. You can enable this by first enabling experimental features in Tools> Options> LibreOffice> Advanced> Experimental Features. Then go to View> Toolbar Layout> Notepad Panel.

Also new is the first full source version of LibreOffice Online, which adds features for co-authoring documents in the browser. Basically, these are private Google Docs that you host yourself. It’s aimed primarily at businesses, but that doesn’t mean you can’t install it on your own server if you want, although it does require some technical skill to do so.
