Make a Star Filter From the CD Case to Add Shimmer to Your Photos

During the holidays, you may notice that many of the photos have a beautiful twinkling appearance, in which each light looks like a flash of a star. Photographers achieve this effect with a star filter, but if you don’t want to spend money on a professional lens filter, you can easily make your own.

Eva Landry demonstratesin this video how easy it is. She simply removes the clear plastic cover from the CD case and scribbles into a series of parallel lines — diagonally in both directions, and straight up and down where the diagonal lines intersect. Each intersection is a point of a star, so the effect will create six-pointed stars in this case. Then you just hold it in front of the lens and voila, the holiday lights flicker as you shoot at night. This is essentially the same as a real star filter – only rough around the edges.
