America’s Best Hot Dogs, Places You Must See Before They Go Away, and ISS Tour
This week we tour the International Space Station, make bread using geothermal energy and sample some of the best hot dogs in America. We also fill out your wishlist and do some thought experiments.
Volcano Bread
The beauty of baking bread is that all you really need is flour, water, salt, yeast, and a well, heating. Then you have all the warmth you need. Director Alison Grasso embarked on a tour called The Rye Bread Experience , where you will learn how geothermal ovens work by cooking in them, and filmed this short film about the process of making bread thanks to the warmth and power of constantly moving earth and heat. under our feet. It will take a while – 24 hours to be exact – but the results are, well, I’ll let you see. [ via Here Say , thanks to Kottke ! ]
Six beautiful, incredible places to see before they disappear forever
If you’re making a wishlist, you might want to add a trip to the Alaskan tundra, the Great Barrier Reef, or the Venetian Lagoon and Canals to your list. Not only because your time is limited, but because they have too. Venice is sinking, climate change and sea acidification are one or two blows that kill the Great Barrier Reef, and the permafrost beneath the Alaskan tundra is slowly but surely melting, changing the ecosystem forever.
Don’t want to go so far from home? Consider a visit to the Everglades – rising sea levels threaten America’s most unique ecosystems and most biodiverse habitats, but that’s not the only factor to blame: human development has also had a huge impact. Apart from these two, here is the complete list:
- Alaska tundra
- Everglades National Park, Florida
- Tikal National Park, Guatemala
- Great Barrier Reef
- Amazon rainforest
- Venetian lagoon
Some of them are beautiful by nature, others are man-made, but they are all worth a trip. [ via Oyster ]
If you woke up tomorrow in the body of your five-year-old self, what would you do?
This is a popular thought experiment:
I think we all have our own answers to this question, but this Quora thread is full of them, including this super-real answer from Elke Weiss, which is probably legal for most of us, even if we prefer the more quirky and funny. answers:
Most likely, I will go crazy.
At 5 years old, but with an adult mentality, I would be trapped in a peer group, so intellectually inferior to me that I would become depressed and unhappy. I will be considered a child prodigy and will probably be in college at age 5, which is not very good for my emotional development.
Yes, I would have invested in Apple, Facebook and Netflix before.
I wouldn’t date my first boyfriend.
Could have stopped the greatest tragedy of my life.
But would I be myself? I am composing my experience and now I have erased it.
Too real, Elke. Too real. But honestly, it makes sense. Most of us would probably use the common phrase, “I would play the lottery!” or “I would change the future!” or “I would invest in Apple / Microsoft / Amazon / whatever”, but the answers here go beyond the usual and go a little deeper. This is a fun read. [ via Quora ]
Best Hot Dogs in America
What could be more American than a German-style hot dog? Even though the hot dog is rooted in German sausages (sausages in particular), the United States is the birthplace of the hot dog and we made it unique. So unique, in fact, that First We Feast has a dizzying selection of the best hot dogs in the country , from classic Coney Island dogs topped with chili and mustard, to the ever-adorable Chicago dogs.
Some more interesting dogs are also featured, such as my personal favorite, Ben’s Chili Bowl Half Smoke, or a dog with an almost oversupply of corn chips and chili at Luscher’s Red Hots. Click on the link to explore them all and get as hungry as I am. [ via First We Feast ]
Beautiful high-resolution flyby of the International Space Station
The ISS is an outpost of humanity in high orbit, and it is worth remembering that it has been permanently resided since 2000. Since then, it has grown, added some details, received some updates, and this video is a great overview of it all. , module to module, completely 4K if you have a display or TV that supports it. If not, it’s still a great watch. Have a nice week. [ via NASA ]
