Practice Being More Mindful by Focusing on Your Choices

We could all probably be more mindful or aware of the present and interact with it . But it’s so easy to get bogged down in mindless consumption : checking statistics, updating notifications, aimlessly browsing. Choice can help you learn to be more mindful.

It may sound simple, but there is tremendous power in the small decisions you make every day. For example, making choices can help you gradually gain a sense of control over a situation. And as personal finance writer Keith Flanders notes, choice can also help raise awareness and intention. She writes:

… that every time I faced a choice, I made a deliberate decision – and at least 80% of them were healthy. When it came to food, I asked myself: Do I want to feel awake for the rest of the day, or do I want to suffer? (It seems obvious, but it’s crazy how often I ate bad food without caring about the consequences.) With training: no questions asked – I just walked everywhere. And with spending: am I comfortable exchanging money for experience or not?

Sounds simple … and it is! The point, however, is that too often we make decisions thoughtlessly, without thinking about them. When you pause to consider the impact and intent of your decision, you are giving yourself the opportunity to become more aware and aware of your purpose.

Flanders goes into more detail on this topic in his full post. Read it at the link below.
