How to Get Your Old Hangouts Chrome Extension Back

Google recently revamped the Hangouts Chrome extension, making it a little more similar to its Android and iOS equivalents. For some, this is a welcome update, but others have opted for the old style of floating windows. Here’s how to get the old interface back.

Patricia Mayo Tejedor and Sandoche Adittane decided to take Hangouts into their own hands by hosting the old extension on GitHub . It takes a little more work to install, but it’s pretty straightforward. First you need to download their repository and unzip it into a folder. Then in Chrome:

  1. Go to chrome: // extensions
  2. Turn on “Developer Mode”
  3. Click the “Download unpacked extension …” button and navigate to the folder where you saved the repository.

That’s all. You need to disable the official Hangouts extension and the old extension will always be in this folder, so don’t delete or move it as much as you want. Head over to GitHub for an even more detailed guide so you can get your floating Hangouts windows back.
