Why Battery Life Estimates Never Seem Accurate

Whether it’s a laptop, tablet or smartphone, estimates of battery life always seem completely wrong. How-To Geek explains why.

While it may seem obvious, battery charge estimates are generally wrong because they cannot predict the future. All the program can do is see what you are doing at the moment, and then try to estimate how much battery power is left if you continue to do the same the rest of the time. How-To Geek explains:

For example, a laptop can last ten hours on a single charge if you dim its display and browse the web. Bump up the display brightness to maximum and run a demanding PC game, and the score can be two hours …

This estimate can also fluctuate depending on how your computer is running in the background. For example, Windows might install updates that use more CPU resources, drain your battery faster, and lower your score. Even if you are just browsing the Internet, some websites, especially those with video ads, use more system resources than others.

It’s pretty obvious when you think about it, but probably not all of us think about it often. See How-To Geek for details.
