Amazon Launches Unlimited Music With Carefully Picked Playlists and Stations, More Music

Amazon offered music to Prime subscribers for a while, but it was always more of an add-on. Amazon is now serious about its much larger library, carefully curated playlists and radio stations. This new tier costs $ 9.99 per month, or $ 7.99 if you already own Prime.

According to Amazon, its regular music service, Prime, only offered “over two million songs,” which is probably enough for you to miss the gaps if you’re only looking for really popular stuff. However, as anyone who has ever tried to make eclectic playlists has discovered, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Services like Spotify, Play Music and iTunes have subscriptions with a lot more songs. With Music Unlimited, Amazon is expanding its library to “tens of millions” of songs, so you’re probably in better luck if you find something to listen to.

The service also includes more features you’d expect from a music subscription. You can find carefully curated playlists and customizable radio stations (similar to Pandora, not the radio in your car) if you want someone else to find something for you to listen to. All of this will be available in the updated Amazon Music app, which is rolling out to iOS, Android, and desktops. If you have an Amazon Echo , you will also be able to use several new voice commands.

If you’re not an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can access Music Unlimited for the standard now $ 9.99 per month. Prime users get $ 7.99 a month discount, or you can pay $ 79 for an entire year. If you just need extra music through Echo devices, you can pay $ 3.99 a month. If you already have a Prime subscription for other reasons, this may make getting a special music subscription more attractive than more expensive options elsewhere. Unless, of course, you are unhappy with the music that is already included in Prime.
