Clean and Freshen Pillows in Three Easy Steps

You bury your face in pillows every night, so it’s a good idea to clean them from time to time. Fortunately, this is very easy to do. Just follow these three steps.

Pillows can get quite dirty, especially when they show nasty yellow spots . In this video from YouTube channel Consumer Reports, home editor Dan Diclerico explains the easiest way to brush up on a standard pillow:

  1. Hang it outside on a sunny, breezy day to air out first.
  2. Then throw it into the washing machine on a gentle setting. Use warm water and a mild detergent.
  3. Finally, hang it up to air dry, or toss it into the dryer. If you are putting the dryer in the dryer, add a few dry towels to speed up the drying process, and add a few tennis balls to loosen the pillow as it dries.

If you have down pillows it is best to hand wash them, but they can withstand the spin cycle of your washing machine before being thrown in the dryer.

However, if you have a memory foam pillow, you will not be able to use the washer or dryer. You can still hang it outside to ventilate, but if you need to wash it, don’t put it in the washing machine. Instead, Mary Marlowe Leverett of About Home recommends soaking it in a bathtub with warm water and detergent and squeezing the pillow gently so the water and detergent goes through the lather like a sponge. Then drain the soapy water and rinse the pillow several times with clean water before pouring out the water and letting it air dry.
