Make Sure You Legally Record People With Home Security Cameras

Building your own home security system has never been easier. However, if your cameras can record sound, depending on your state, you will be breaking wiretapping laws if you do not have consent from the people who visit your home.

As product review site The Wirecutter points out, installing cameras to monitor your home is great. On the other hand, the recording can cause some legal complications. Especially if you are recording audio in a state that requires double consent .

There are different legal rules for video and audio recordings, and there are many nuances in which to navigate. For example, you will obviously be allowed to watch a live feed of your front door, but if you put a camera in the bathroom and film your guests, you will get in trouble with the law, even if it is technically on your property. Laws vary from state to state, so you will have to check local laws for details, but it is worth doing this before setting up your security system.
