At this year’s New York City Coffee Festival, Mental Floss interviewed baristas and coffee experts to find out how best to brew coffee at home. All of them strongly recommend purchasing a quality coffee grinder. As Chloe Langham, a coffee instructor at Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters in Brooklyn, explained to Mental Floss, a good grinder will have all the ground beans the same size, so the coffee extracts will be extracted at the same rate. Uneven grounds can make the coffee sour or bitter. Large bits will not be extracted enough, and small bits will be redundant. However, a cheap coffee grinder with rotating blades won’t do the job.
