Here’s What Really Low-Calorie Ice Cream Like Halo Top Contains
Regular ice cream is rich in sugar and fat, so it is best used in small doses from time to time. But some brands like Halo Top and Arctic Zero are now making incredibly low calorie frozen desserts. What is really in them?
First, the air. Fooducate notes that a half cup of Halo Top weighs just two-thirds of a half cup of Haagen Dazs. This way, you actually get less food in a container of the same size, even though Halo Top costs about twice as much.
Their choice of sweetener also lowers calories. Halo Top uses stevia , a low-calorie plant extract, and erythritol , a low-calorie sugar alcohol. Arctic Zero uses Monk Fruit Extract , another non-nutritive plant extract.
Both desserts also boast a protein content similar to regular ice cream, despite having fewer calories. Halo Top also lists “prebiotic fiber” as an ingredient, but doesn’t say which one. Fiber and sugar alcohol can cause digestive problems such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. So even if you like the low-calorie label, you can be careful about eating a whole pint.
