Proper Dim Sum Dining Etiquette

Dim sum is not only delicious but also fun to eat with friends and family. However, the dining process can be confusing or intimidating for those who haven’t tried it before. If you follow these basic rules, you will look like a pro dim sum.

Dim sum is a type of Chinese cuisine in which small portions of a wide variety of dishes are served on plates or in steamer baskets. So how does it all work? All food is family style, where everyone has a little bit of everything. Chinese culinary expert Caroline Phillips, author of The Dim Sum Field Guide , shares some of the most important ground rules with Food52 :

  • Serve others tea in front of you
  • Never pretend to be a single dish, but share
  • Only cook the dish if everyone else has given up on the last bite.
  • Take just a little
