Watch Closely What Other Tourists Are Paying Before Bargaining for Souvenirs

When shopping abroad, especially in a place where bargaining is commonplace, watch closely what other tourists are paying before checking out. You can get a better deal if you know how much someone just paid for the same item.

If you can, get off the beaten track and browse local shops or markets to see how much locals are paying for the items you want. If you prefer tourist areas or what you buy is for tourists, keep your eyes and ears open to know how much others are paying. Some providers may try to charge you more if they think you are from a “rich” country or know you have a good conversion rate. With a little refurbishment before you start haggling – assuming you’re in a store that haggles over prices, of course – you will have a solid foundation for deciding how high you are willing to go.
