The Most Reliable Hard Drives by Backblaze

We’ve previously looked to cloud storage company Backblaze for recommendations on the most trusted hard drive brands . The company is now back with some data on the best specific models they use to store your data .

The company breaks down which models they use with all 68,813 hard drives they have. Surprisingly, despite past data showing high failure rates for the Seagate brand as a whole, the particular 4TB Seagate ST4000DM000 makes up 50.4% of their server space. Backblaze describes this model as its “workhorse” given its enormous capabilities. This model has an annual failure rate of 2.8%.

You can view the full report at the link below. This isn’t an exhaustive overview of the entire hard drive industry (Backblaze specifically notes that they don’t have many hard drives from Toshiba or Western Digital), but it’s an interesting look at a real-world stress testing environment.
