Can You Read These Footprints and Not Get Lost in the Forest?

Would you like to hike or run the trail? It helps you know how to stay on the trail. Many trails are marked with colored rectangles called flames so you know where the trail goes. But keeping track of the flames is sometimes harder than it sounds. This quiz will teach you how to do it.

The rules are simple: single fire means you are on the right track and you need to keep going. Two flames of the same color on top of each other – a sign that the path is turning. If the overhead light is shifted to the right, you turn right. If it’s shifted to the left, you turn left. (Sometimes the lights will be right on top of each other and that just means the trail is turning and you need to figure out which way.) A three-light sign can indicate the beginning or end of a trail, but many trails only get around with single and double flames.

So that’s all you need to know: singles for straight, doubles for turns. Different colors represent different paths. Ready? Let’s go hiking.
