Get a Basic Level Before Trying to Read Someone’s Body Language

The ability to read body language – a useful skill . Before you start following one action to see if someone is lying , start by learning how to determine a person’s basic body language.

The baseline is simply how a person behaves normally without any particular reason to act differently. We often try to monitor body language to see if someone is lying or attracted to us , but not everyone behaves the same under these circumstances. By observing someone’s initial state, you learn how they behave on a regular basis, and then you can watch for when that behavior changes. As the advice site Barking Up the Wrong Tree explains:

If someone is always nervous, nervousness doesn’t tell you anything. If someone is constantly nervous and suddenly stops moving – HELLO. So ask yourself, “Is this what they usually do?”

This step is so important to reading someone’s body language that you should practice it long before you ever try to figure out what a particular action “means”. The next time you are with someone, take a second to observe things like where they put their hands, how they put their feet, or how often they smile. You don’t need to take notes (it’s creepy), just practice your observation. The more you practice, the easier it will be to notice changes in body language when they occur.
