The Best Way to Clean Leather, Suede and Textured Sneakers

Knowing how to clean your shoes properly helps them last longer and keep them (and you) looking good, especially considering how expensive beautiful shoes can be. Here’s the best way to clean leather, suede, and textured sneakers.

The material is different for each type of shoe, so the amount of cleaning solution and the type of brush you use will vary, but in general, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Standard brush with synthetic bristles (ideal for leather sneakers and foam soles)
  • Premium brush with softer bristles (ideal for knitting or delicate fabrics)
  • Dry brush to remove dirt before using water and solution.
  • A bowl of water to dip your brushes into
  • If you don’t want to buy a shoe polish solution , a cleaning solution , diluted dish detergent, or laundry soap (like this one from video host Jason Marks) will do.
  • Cloth for padding soft shoes to keep in shape
  • Towels for squeezing water out of the sneaker material after cleaning

Typically, you clean your shoes of dust and dirt before cleaning them with water and solution. Take your time to avoid damaging the shoe material by applying too much pressure. Watch the video above for specific cleaning methods for each type of shoe.
