Watch Out for Charity Scams After the Orlando Shooting

The IRS has issued a warning warning consumers of recent charity fraud. Specifically, these scams target people who want to donate to the victims of the recent Orlando massacre .

In a press release, the IRS said:

While there has been a huge wave of support for Orlando’s victims and families across the country, scammers often use this generosity by posing as charities to obtain money or personal information from well-meaning taxpayers. Such fraudulent schemes can include contact by phone, social media, email, or personal inquiries … The IRS website at IRS.gov has an Exempt Organizations Select Check that can help people find suitable charities …

It is worth noting that some of the smaller organizations legitimately collecting money may not be on the database yet. To help you pinpoint fraud, the IRS offers several red flags to look out for. For example, if the name of an organization is very similar to a familiar or nationally known organization, this could be a red flag. Charity Navigator also has a current list of donor recommendations and you can check their databases as well. Read more in the press release below.
