Why You Should Ask to Reschedule Your Date If You Are Late for Your Interview

You prepare for an important interview when unforeseen circumstances arise that put you at risk of being late. You might be tempted to hurry up and arrive as soon as possible, but in reality it makes things worse for both you and the interviewer.

Regardless, be sure to notify the interviewer as soon as possible if you are running late. This is a polite and professional approach. Once you’ve done that, Christy Jones, HR Talent Manager at H&R Block, suggests asking you to reschedule – even if you still think you can get there on time if you hurry. This is best, according to Jones, for several reasons. First, being late for an interview is stressful, and that stress can negatively affect your interview behavior. Second, you give them the opportunity to choose the time that is best for them, instead of trying to squeeze you into their already full schedule for the day. Remember, your interview is a time slot on their schedule. Being late forces them to adjust their day. If you’re worried about how changing your work schedule will make you look like a candidate, Marybeth Stankowitz, Yelp’s technical recruiting manager, recommends that you send a sincere apology letter that shows that you are still very interested in the position.
