Roll Perfect Sushi at Home Without a Sushi Mat

Making sushi at home is fun, delicious, and easier than you think. Making perfect rolls doesn’t require special equipment like sushi mats. All you need is a tea towel, plastic wrap, and sushi ingredients.

When all the ingredients are ready to assemble, take a clean kitchen towel and place it on a flat surface the width of a sheet of seaweed. You need a surface that is not too high (for example, some countertops) so that you can apply the necessary force to the roll. Place six to eight inches of plastic wrap on the towel. This will prevent the rice and other ingredients from sticking to the towel.

Place the sushi roll on plastic wrap, leaving three to four inches of space between the edge of the sushi and the edge of the towel. Gently pull on the edge of the towel closest to you and transfer it to sushi so that it begins to curl. You only need to curl it a little, take your time and don’t try to do too much at once. Place a towel over the unfolded portion of the sushi and squeeze the folded portion so that it retains the shape of the roll. Keep rolling and then press down on the sushi until it’s done. Slice up and enjoy the delicious effort of your labor. For a visual demonstration, watch the video above.
