There Is No Such Thing As “negative Calorie Foods”

You were probably told at some point that eating celery actually burns more calories than it contains. While celery is low in calories and is a refreshing snack, there are no foods that are considered negative calories.

In this video from YouTube channel SciShow, host Michael Aranda explains what actually happens in your body when you eat so-called “negative calorie foods”. The reality is that all food contains calories, and the process will not burn it instantly. This is intentional. Your body wants to get as much energy as possible from the food you eat and tries to use as little energy as possible to digest it – even with ultra-low-calorie foods like raw celery. Due to its high water and fiber content, celery is easy to digest, so your body really needs to burn fewer calories to process it.

For example, a full stalk of celery contains about 10 calories of carbohydrates, sugar, and protein. Your body burns about two calories by digesting them, resulting in about eight calories. However, celery and other super-low-calorie foods like carrots, grapefruit, cucumbers, and apples are great snacks when you’re trying to optimize your diet . These snacks will make you feel full without feeling guilty and help you achieve your goals.
