Instagram’s Viral Slimming Teas Are Just a Laxative

Celebrities on Instagram love to sell weight loss products, and one of the biggest trends is teatox: herbal “detox” teas that are supposed to help you lose weight naturally. Of course, there are no miracle cures, and many of these teas are purely laxative.

According to research by Chavi Lieber at Racked, Instagram tea sponsors are paid between $ 3,000 and $ 250,000 to post. She writes that to the extent that teas do something, they feed on hay, better known as the active ingredient in Ex-Lax.

Senna is listed as effective for constipation in Medline Plus Supplements , but there is no evidence that it can be recommended for weight loss. Teatox companies, according to Lieber, are sometimes open about the tea’s impact and sometimes hide behind vague expressions of good mood.

Celebrities, of course, didn’t necessarily get their physique from tea; Typically, tea companies turn to popular Instagrammers for promotional deals. They sometimes allow for a “remove clause” that allows the poster to remove an ad from its feed once it has completed its task.
