These Four Common Insects Can Help You Find Water in a Survival Environment

If you are lost in the wild, finding a source of drinking water is one of your number one priorities. These four pesky little bugs can really save your life.

There are many ways to find water in the wild , but using the wild is one of the most effective. After all, animals and insects also need water to live. However, finding a deer or other animal in order to proceed to the source of water is not as easy as finding insects. This is why Mark Lawrence of Secrets of Survival invites you to find these four insects that can point you to where the water is:

  1. Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant or slow moving water. If you come across swarms of mosquitoes, you should be close to a water source. However, keep in mind that drinking water from stagnant bodies is not recommended. However, a small stagnant body of water may mean there are other springs nearby.
  2. Bees: Bee hives, which can be found on a tree, stump, or along rocks, are usually located within three to five miles of a water source. Once you find the hive, try to get a high vantage point and scan the landscape for dark green vegetation. You can also observe the hive and pay attention to where the bees fly, and then follow them to see if they are heading towards the water source.
  3. Ants: If you find an anthill, see if there is a row of ants leading to a water source. If the ants live inside a tree or stump, there may be some water inside, which can be accessed with a knife and drinking straws that can be molded from a large leaf.
  4. Flies: Like mosquitoes, flies are a great marker for the nearest water source. They usually don’t move more than 100 meters from the water, so if you spot one, start listening and watching.

If you find a little water, make sure you take the necessary precautions before drinking it. Boil the water, use a survival water filter, or use drops to purify the water if you can. You don’t want to swallow a bunch of nasty bacteria and other pathogens. You can find some more helpful tips for finding water in the wild at the link below.
