Make a Temperature Indicator for a Thermochromatic Pigment Mixer

It may take some time for the tap water to warm up. Yes, you can wait with your finger under the water, but it would be much easier if you could see when it finally gets hot. This DIY smart temperature indicator does just that.

This YouTube video from Shake the Future shows you how to create a simple mixer temperature indicator that doesn’t require special tools, batteries or electronics. All you need is some clear nail polish and some thermochromatic pigment, which loses its color when heated. Remove the nozzle from the mixer, paint it red and let dry. Then mix the thermochromic pigment with clear nail polish, paint over with red and let dry. The nozzle should now appear blue in neutral. When you attach it back to the faucet and try to pour some hot water, the nozzle will turn red when it finally heats up. Now you can do other things in the kitchen while you wait and know exactly when it will be ready. If you don’t have a nozzle on your faucet, you can do the same by placing a dot somewhere on the faucet instead.
