Deal With Job Loss or Layoffs by Volunteering

Getting fired or fired can be frustrating and emotional . You don’t know what to do with your time, and worse, sometimes you start to doubt your worth. Volunteering empowers you to deal effectively with a situation.

After losing your job, it’s easy to let your emotions take over. It keeps you busy for the day and keeps you busy . At Reader’s Digest, Laurie Sherwin, founder of the career site Strategize That , suggests volunteering:

Your work situation is your number one problem right now, and it is probably overwhelming. “Give yourself an emotional respite from any worry by spending some time supporting others in their difficult circumstances,” Sherwin suggests. Pick a business or organization that matters to you and take some time to it. This will put things in perspective, add value to your resume, and can also help you connect and find like-minded people.

I did this when I got fired and it was really helpful. For me, the most rewarding aspect was a sense of purpose. Once again, I enjoyed feeling productive rather than thinking about what I was going to do with my time or my career in general. It was a welcome and productive distraction.
