Benefits of Lifting With Free Weights Instead of Machines
You go to the gym for a weight-lifting class, and immediately you are given a choice: to take free weights or jump on one of the machines? Here’s an explanation for when you should use both.
This video from the PictureFit YouTube channel explains the main differences between pumping with free weights and machines. In most cases, free weights (barbells, dumbbells, weights, etc.) will be your best option for several reasons:
- Instability in free weights helps build stabilizing muscles. It improves your balance, athleticism and coordination. Machines take instability out of the equation.
- Free weights allow you to move the bar naturally or however you like. This allows your workout to simulate real-life movements. Cars can restrict this type of movement.
- You can do almost any exercise with free weights. The situation is different with machines designed to perform several specific lifts.
However, there are many scenarios in which hoisting machines are a much better option:
- The stability of the hoists makes them a great option for those in trauma rehabilitation.
- Lifting machines have a much lower learning curve, making them ideal for beginners and seniors to lift.
- You can isolate specific muscle groups much easier with an exercise machine.
In general, free weights are better for building overall strength and targeting the muscles you naturally use. If you can handle it, learn how to properly lift weights with free weights. However, lifting machines are not useless. If you are working with free weights or need extra stability, weights are the best choice.
