Turn Off All Gadgets From Time to Time to Generate Creative Ideas

When you’re trying to come up with creative ideas, it’s helpful to contribute, such as reading a book or listening to music. However, you should also give yourself time to digest your thoughts silently.

As business site Entrepreneur points out, creativity is easy to lose. You try to sit down to write or draw, your phone rings, and before you know it, you’re head over heels in a video of something being crushed by a hydraulic press . When it’s time to generate creative ideas, turn off your gadgets and allow yourself to be quiet for a while:

Even if you don’t admit it, you are probably addicted to your phone. The average American spends 12 hours a day watching media, so even if your level is slightly below average, you still use your phone most of the time. For this exercise, put your phone in your car, outside, or in your mailbox – anywhere where the urge to check it is overcome by the fact that you have to put on your shoes to go after it. Just take it out of your space for five minutes.

Turning off gadgets is a useful tool for focusing your attention, but in this case it’s also useful even if you don’t have specific things to work on. Your brain continues to work even when you are not bombarded with stimuli. Silence allows your thoughts to flow without being distracted from the first red icon you see. If you never give yourself time to be quiet and think, you are probably not using your creativity to the fullest.
