Why You Should Look for Job Advertisements Even If You Don’t Want to Quit
If you want to increase your professional value and build a better career , you need to diversify and hone your skills. Personal finance writer David Carlson recommends periodically looking for job advertisements to see what skills are in demand.
In his book Hustle Away Debt, Carlson says that regularly reviewing jobs can help you gain the skills and experience you need beforehand. It’s certainly helpful if you’re planning to quit smoking, but it’s actually helpful even if you enjoy your job. Learning new skills only adds value to your position, which gives you an edge when it comes time to ask for a promotion or negotiate for a promotion.
Here’s what Carlson has to offer:
One thing I do at least once a month or two is looking for vacancies for the next level at work. I look at which skill types fall into the required section and which fall into the preferred one. I can see the kind of credentials and knowledge hiring managers are looking for. I look at what technical and social skills I need. I am not just consuming this information. I turn it into action items. If most jobs are looking for people who have worked with data, I would consider volunteering on projects that require me to query and analyze large datasets. I can even spend time outside of work developing these skills (preferably in a part-time job).
