Peeling Sticky Dough Is Easier Using Cold Water

If you bake bread, you know how painful it can be when the dough is lifted from your bowls and utensils, especially if you don’t get to it right away. To make things easier, soak in cold water first.

The dough sticks because of the gluten in it. Hot water increases gluten and makes food even more sticky. Instead, soak dough-covered instruments in cold water for about 10 minutes. This will help loosen up gluten. Use your fingers to gently rub off the dough. If you’re working in a bowl or sink filled with cold water, you can usually collect the dough as one drop and throw it in the trash instead of down the drain. At this point, you can easily wash off your clothes with hot water and detergent and, as a bonus, don’t use a dough-covered sponge.
