Use Airline Points to Pay for Flights If You May Need to Cancel

Not all flights are refundable, so if you are booking a trip and are not 100% sure of your date, you will want to buy a ticket that can be changed or canceled. The problem is that these tickets can be expensive. Zach Honig of The Points Guy offers an alternative: use your airline’s award miles instead.

Honig explains that he writes a guest on TravelZoo:

One of the biggest benefits of redeeming miles for a flight is that you can often change or cancel your trip entirely for a relatively small fee . Elite frequent flyers can sometimes even do it for free. And if you cancel your bonus, you will usually get your miles back. However, if you cancel a paid, non-refundable flight, you’re probably out of luck.

This is something to consider if your travel dates are not set in stone, but you need to book sooner rather than later. Additional tips on when to redeem your award miles can be found in the full post below.
