Do a ‘shutdown Ritual’ to Truly Relax at Night

Most of us probably do n’t sleep well to begin with . At the very least, do yourself a favor and start a “shutdown ritual” so your brain knows it’s time to relax.

As the advice site Barking Up the Wrong Tree explains, your brain takes an adaptation period to get out of working mode. Otherwise, you will keep walking and walking until you pass out in bed. By establishing a shutdown ritual, you can shorten your daytime activity and let your brain know it’s time to switch to a different mode:

The working day is over. But your mind is still moving, moving and moving. You have to take your brain out of “work mode” to relax. A simple ritual can help. Make a small regular daily routine that will let your overactive brain know that “we are done.” Research shows that writing down what you need to do the next day relieves anxiety and helps you enjoy the evening.

Ideally, your ritual will include completing tasks you didn’t complete and scheduling activities for the next day. Once you’re done with everything, you can relax without worry. However, your ritual should suit you. So whatever helps you relax at the end of the day, just do it constantly. Over time, your brain will become comfortable with the program.
