Create a “success Process” for a Complex Project

If you want to get things done, you’ll have better luck creating a system for your habits than simply using motivation. The next time you kick your ass on a project, be it research, presentation, or any other task, take a moment to think about what worked best so you can come up with a system for future success.

Fast Company calls this the “process of success,” but the idea is the same. Psychologist Leslie Sherlin explains that when we achieve something, we often don’t think about exactly how we achieved it. Fast Company explains:

Often, after successfully completing an experience, people focus so much on the action that they tend to neglect the process that led them to that action. Instead, Sherlin says people should focus on thought, strategy, planning, and all the other little things along the way that ultimately led to their success. They should then study the process in detail and apply the same strategy to different areas of their lives.

“Most of the time, we were just happy we were done, so we just move on,” explains Sherlin. “We need to seriously think about this success. What made me succeed? What condition was I in? What was my process? “

It helps to write it all down and maybe even keep a diary about your workflow. You can document certain techniques you may have used, how you felt while working, how often you took breaks, and so on.
