Kintsugi, the Art of Breaking Pieces, Reminds Us to Appreciate Our Flaws

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with a special varnish containing precious gold. The School of Life video above reminds us of applying the Zen philosophy that underlies this art in our view of ourselves and others.

“In a world that worships youth, perfection and novelty, Kintsugi’s art contains a special wisdom that applies both to our own lives and to pots,” says the soothing narrator. “The care and love shown for the broken pieces should also motivate us to respect that which is damaged and traumatized, vulnerable and imperfect, starting with ourselves and those around us.”

Even broken things have beauty – and when they are repaired with such care and attention, they become even more beautiful.
