Successful Dieters Eat More, According to MyFitnessPal

If you’re trying to lose weight, it can be helpful to know what successful dieters eat. MyFitnessPal analyzed data from its 4.2 million users to compare those who were closer to their weight loss goals and those who did not.

As you probably already know, MyFitnessPal is the app and community that people use to track their diet and exercise. In this study, the company defined “successful” dieters as people who had a goal of losing weight and were within 5% of achieving that goal. (They may not have had a large enough sample for people who achieved their goal.) Then they compared the dietary trends of these 427,000 users with another 3.8 million users in the sample.

Interesting, but perhaps not shocking results: Successful users ate an average of 29% more fiber than other users. They ate less meat (11% less), fewer eggs (13% less), more yogurt (10% more), and more almonds (10% more).

Perhaps the most important takeaway is eating more high-fiber foods: Fiber is the protagonist of the diet .

While the analysis does not include data on exercise, we know that diet is more important than exercise when it comes to weight loss .
