Make Friends With the Bartender for Cash Before Opening a Tab

Debit and credit cards make it easy to open a tab at your favorite bar, but for bartenders, cash is key. If you pay and tip in the first round in cash before switching to plastic, your bartender can thank you later when the bill arrives.

The relationship you develop with your bartender is very important. They usually treat friendly people well and love to take care of people they know will take care of them. If you are starting the night at your favorite pub or tavern, Wired advises you to always use cash, not cards:

If you’re only using plastic, the bartender won’t appreciate your generosity until the end of the evening when you sign the bill. Start with cash and set aside the tip in advance. Then switch to the tab and you will be pleasantly surprised to find that not all of your drinks appear on the bill.

This advice is not uncommon, and some of you have even recommended it in the past , but it is useful information for those who think there is no longer any reason to carry cash with them. The bartenders want you to have a good time and if you scratch their back they will do their best to scratch you.
