The Best Way to Banish Pesky Squirrels From Your Attic
Squirrels can live almost anywhere, but they often prefer the cozy warmth of your attic. Here’s the most effective (and humane) way to get them out of your home.
Malia Vollan of The New York Times spoke with wildlife management specialist David Searveld, and he suggested that squirrels in the attic are one of the most common inconveniences he has to deal with. So how do you drive out intruders? Vollan explains Sirveld’s preferred method:
Find out how they get in and out to get food and water. You will need a ladder to inspect the bottom of the eaves, roof vents, and chimneys. Look for golf ball-sized holes. Cover everything except the main entry point (usually marked with faeces and dental marks) with steel mesh. Place a trap cage or one-way door outside the house, above the last hole. (Once all the proteins have come out, close this hole as well.)
This method allows the animals to freely go out, but not come back. When it comes to protein, it is generally best to avoid using poisons. While electromagnetic and ultrasonic repellents work well with other pests , Searveld suggests they are not very effective for squirrels.
