Make the Best McMuffin-Like Egg Sandwich With a Stone Jar Lid

Instead of going to McDonald’s, make a better Egg McMuffin at home. A glass jar lid helps you make a cooked egg perfect for this iconic breakfast sandwich (or any egg sandwich for that matter).

J. Kenji Lopez-Alt of Serious Eats shares this egg-making technique and explains why you want to use the entire mason jar lid – not just the ring shape, but the lid as well:

I tried to place the ring shape directly into my skillet so the eggs would hold their shape while cooking – similar to how they do it at McDonald’s in the store – but it was difficult to get them to cook evenly without browning. McMuffin eggs should be tender and white on both sides. I have also tried cooking eggs in molds in the microwave, with or without water. This was moderately successful, but it was difficult to achieve the consistency desired.

[…] By placing the lid and screw ring of the Mason can upside down in the pan, I got the perfect shape the size of an English muffin in which to cook an egg. Plus, since the egg never comes into contact with the bottom of the pan, it stays tender and white as it cooks.

Add some water to the skillet and cover with a lid to keep the eggs tender and moist. In two minutes, you will have a perfectly cooked egg for your enhanced McMuffin clone.
